BROADCAST #05
AIR DATE: 01-24-06

Here's the notes from tonights show. I am in Sydney Australia at the moment on a night off. Hopefully you liked the music. I have a long day tomorrow. Press from 0730 until past noon and then I am going to visit a young man who has cancer. Hit some record stores today and found some good stuff but none of these places are anything near what they used to be. All picked over to the point of it not being worth it even going but I managed to find a Joy Division boot that is in better shape than the one I already have and I also found a 2 LP Roxy Music boot I have never seen and some cool Sabbath stuff.
Best thing of the tour so far, besides how amazing the audiences have beenIve been speaking in front of about 5000 people at the Big Day Out Shows has been Iggy and the Stooges. I have to wait for the next Big Day Out show in two days before I can see them again and I am already counting the minutes. What a band! Iggy killed it the other night on the Gold Coast. Insanity! Loose into Down on the Street! Iggy was on fire. Some idiot press guy gave him a bad review in the local paper up there. Shows you how little he knows. Iggy owned that show. People were going nuts. Hes the real deal. Definitely playing Stooges on the show when I get back.

Jerome Robinson Education Rap: This is one of the many gems I rescued from my lawyers outbox in the eighties. She was always getting tapes in and I always went through them in hopes of getting either some great music or some good quality cassettes. I didnt get many tapes I could use but I sure got some great music. This is Jerome Robinson and hes going to break it down for the kids and let them know where its at. Hes no Sean Combs. Word to your mother!

The Lurkers Cyanide: This song is from the bands 2nd album Gods Lonely Men. I have been into this band for about twenty-five years now. They had a line up change at one point and lost their singer Howard Wall. I bought a couple of the singles the band did after he left but couldnt get to them. The Lurkers did a lot of singles and two great albums with Howard Wall. Their first album Fulham Fallout is a classic. Captain Oi, a really cool label in England, has put out both albums on CD with all the singles and demos. You get those two and the BBC Punk Sessions CD and youve got all the stuff by the classic line-up. I still listen to these guys all the time. Gods Lonely Men sees the band really starting to grow as song writers without losing any edge but its frustrating that theres no more material that features Howard Wall, who to me, is one of the all time great singers in Punk Rock. Completely Useless And Gratuitous Anecdote Dept.: We were in England in December of 1981 and had a gig at the Rainbow opening for the Exploited, one of the worst jokes in music history, completely pathetic. Anyway, the very great Honey Bane was opening the show and her bass player was none other then the Lurkers Nigel Moore. Ian MacKaye was out with us and at soundcheck time, we saw Nigel walking around and immediately recognized him. We ran at him, shaved heads and all, yelling, Youre in the Lurkers! He freaked out and thought we were going to pound him. He mellowed out a little after we talked to him for a second and he found out we were merely rabid fans. Hes the only Lurker I have ever met. I have always wanted to meet Howard Wall but I cant find the guy anywhere. Howard, come out! Your fan is waiting!

Flipper Love Canal: A great Flipper single. I did a lot of shows with Flipper in the 80s. What a band. I will never forget hanging outside Target Video in San Francisco with them when Greg Ginn asked if they wanted to be on SST. The bands singer, Bruce, just went off on Ginn and told him that Black Flag were just punk rockstars and SST was just a small label that wanted to be mainstream. It was hard to watch Ginn take it from Bruce. We put them on our bills all the time and SST was a great label. Ginn wasnt in line for that kind of dressing down but that was Flipper. Devastating live band. Their version of Super Freak was incredible.

Dinosaur Jr. Little Fury Things: Didnt I play Dinosaur Jr. recently? Perhaps. Theres no bad J Mascis records as far as Im concerned so heres a great early track. Their early stuff is getting hard to find. Bug, Dinosaur and Youre Living All Over Me are set for re-release in 2005. Lets hope for that and a new J record soon. Dino Update Dept.: The self-titled first album, Youre Living All Over Me and Bug have all been remastered and re-released and the sound difference is substantial. If youre a fan of these records, the new versions are better. They are on the Merge label. http://www.mergerecords.com/news.php

Roky Erickson If You Have Ghosts: I dont know if I chose this song or I Think Of Demons to play and its too late to find Engineer X and ask him. Hopefully you heard some Roky Erickson here and I hope you liked it.

Duke Ellington Pretty And The Wolf: From one of my favorite Ellington albums, Hot Summer Dance on Red Baron. The world of Ellington is so huge that no matter how much time you spend with his recordings, you can still find yourself overwhelmed by the sheer volume of his catalog. I dont know where to steer you really. I have my favorite albums like The Far East Suite, The Afro-Eurasian Eclipse, Blues In Orbit, The Great Paris Concert, but then theres all that early stuff when he had those killer trumpet players like Bubber Miley and Cootie Williams. Duke is a world of music unto his own and hes worth checking out. Theres a great book about him called Beyond Category by John Edward Hasse. Naturally, Dukes a Washington DC boy. He was born at the wrong time. He could have been on Dischord.

The Wall Ghetto: Cool band. This is my favorite song of theirs. They recorded on the Fresh and Small Wonder labels and then later on Polydor. I have looked around but cant find any info on them. Theres a cool collection of their stuff on Captain Oi. Ghetto and Exchange are my two favorite songs of theirs. I think by the time they got to Polydor, they had changed their sound. I looked at the very cool punk77 site and theres no listing for them so they dont pass muster there. Heres the address to that site: http://www.punk77.co.uk/index.htm

Boozoo Chavis Dog Hill: On the CD called Boozoo Chavis, on Nonesuch. If you go to Amazon.com, you can see all his stuff. I have every record of his Ive ever seen. He was so great. A Zydeco king! I got see him once in 1997 in New York. He played Dog Hill and I was very happy about that. He passed away not so long ago. All his records are great, this is a good one to start with. If Boozoo doesnt rock you, I dont know how to help.

Casual Dots Mommas Gonna Bake Us A Cake: A relatively new release on the Kill Rock Stars label. Really cool record. C Dots line-up: Christina from Slant 6, Quix*o*tic and Autoclave; Kathi from Bikini Kill; and Steve from Deep Lust. A lot of Kill Rockstars, Dischord Records back history and indie cred. there. Anyway, its a cool record. This is my favorite song from it. Christinas vocals on this track are really cool. The whole record is good. The Kill Rock Stars label is worth checking out. You can find them: killrockstars.com. I got to see the Casual Dots play in LA awhile ago and they were really good.

Chiefs Knocked Out: From the classic three track EP by this So Cal band. Hard to find but Flipside put out a great CD of their music thats got it all called Hollywest Crisis. Theres also a vinyl version out of Italy on Hate Records that sounds great. Not a bad song in the bunch. If you like this, you will like the rest. If you go to this site, they have a repro of the single sleeve and a little bit of info: http://www.thisispunkrock.btinternet.co.uk/ps/us/cheifs.htm. I remember meeting the singer Jerry Koskie when I joined Black Flag and for me, it was like meeting royalty. I only met him once but that was cool enough for me. I am glad that Flipside put out all their stuff so everyone can check it out. The single will run you way too much money and music this good should be easily available. One of the many bands I would have given anything to see live.

The Big Bopper Big Boppers Wedding Day: This guys a huge part of Rock and Roll history. He was in the plane with Buddy Holly and Ritchie Valens that crashed on 02-03-59 killing all three, also known as the day the music died. Theres a cool page of concise info on the man, http://www.tsimon.com/bopper.htm. What a voice! I love this song, its so funny. The big man does a great job singing White Lightnin too but hes not the only one to cover this song as youll hear tonight.

The Fall - Cheetham Hill: From the Light User Syndrome album. I think this came out in 1996. I have been working late at the company a lot since mid-November as I always do during the holiday season. When Heidi The Racket May leaves and the place quiets down, I grab a stack of Fall CDs and get to work with Mark E. Smith in the background. Its always a good time. I have been listening to the Cheetham Hill album a lot lately.
Black Eyes Pack of Wolves

Air Miami - I Hate Milk: From the Me. Me. Me. album on Teenbeat. I am huge fan of Mark Robinson and his cool label. Mark has a great indie label and is very prolific. He has had several bands and hes on a lot of Teenbeat stuff: Flin Flon, Unrest, Olympic Death Squad and his solo stuff. Ive been playing his Tiger Banana album a lot recently as well as Flin Flons A-OK album. The Air Miami stuff is great. Check their site if you get a chance. Teenbeat, one of the great real deal American indie labels. http://www.teenbeatrecords.com/

Cigarettes Theyre Back Again, Here They Come: Hard to find single. Have been playing this one for over twenty years. A double CD of all their stuff just came out, its called Cigarettes Will Damage Your Health and its on Detour records. Theres a little bit about them on the Punk 77 website but not much. They had some really cool pop/punk songs. Well written stuff. Worth checking out. This is my favorite song by them.

Buzzcocks Whatever Happened To?: The b-side to the great Orgasm Addict single. At some point this year, we gotta listen to the French version of this single where the record company accidentally sent the wrong versions of the songs to the company and they were released. Really rare. I think youll find that alt. version of this song interesting.

Dr. Mix and the Remix No Fun: Members of French noise men Metal Urbain formed this band who made grating versions of songs they loved. Two 12 records turned into one CD years later. Their versions of Black Cadillac and Out Of The Question are great but nothing compared to their set-on-kill version of Sister Ray. Tonight, all you get is the single version of the Stooges classic No Fun. All their stuff has been re-issued on the very cool Acute Records.

Eric Dolphy Out There: From the album Out There. I am not qualified to write about Eric Dolphy. What a man. In the early sixties, he was in Coltranes unit and if you listen to Coltrane before and after Dolphys tenure in the band, you can tell who rubbed off on whom. I think Dolphy was as good as any of the great players of his time. His own records are great, the live boots of the European shows he did with Coltrane are insane and then theres the summer of 1964 when he toured with Charles Mingus. Theres also some great shows on boot CDs from radio broadcasts. Dolphy plays sax, flute and clarinet all in one show. Hes as good as it gets. Dolphy died in 1964.

The Afflicted a.k.a. The Afflicted Man - Hippy Punk: I might be pushing it with this one but Ive been wanting to play The Afflicted for some time. I have always wanted to know more about this one man band from England. Theres some vinyl out there, long out of print and costly. Most of them are in plain or xeroxed sleeves, except for one single and one LP that came in pink and white striped bags. Bonk Records was The Afflicted Mans label. I asked John Esplen about The Afflicted Man and he dashed off some quick facts and I didnt remember much of it. Does anyone know anything about this band? Look, A Train! Dept.: Heres the Afflicted Mans releases in chronological order:
Im Afflicted / Be Aware (single) Aff1
Who Can Tell / All Right Boy (single) - Aff2
Afflicted Mans Musical Bag (LP) - Aff3
Afflicted Mans New One (single) - Aff4
Im Off Me Ead (LP) Aff5
Get Stoned Ezy (High Speed & The Afflicted Man) (12 EP) - Aff6
Thanks to a couple of our loyal listeners, we have new information on The Afflicted Mans recordings post Afflicted. Apparently, The Afflicted Man is named Steve Hall and he either joined or formed The Accursed. On their first album Aggressive Punk, he only plays guitar and its pretty standard G.B.H / Discharge early 80s fare. After this album though, Steve took over vocals and what you get is a more straight ahead version of The Afflicted and its pretty damn cool because he is a trippy guitar player and great singer. Heres The Accurseds output as close as I know it, in chronological order:
Aggressive Punk (LP) ACC1
Up With The Punks (LP) ACC2
Going Down / I Didnt Mean It (single) ACC3
Laughing At You (LP) ACC4
After that, from what I can gather, Steve went from this outfit and formed and band named Called, apparently a born-again Christian band that plays hospitals. I cant find any recorded output of this band. I dont know anyone who knows this guy or has seen him play, hence my curiosity. Heres a site with a tiny bit of info: http://hyped2death.com/linr45.html

Rick James Below The Funk (Pass The J): My favorite song from the Street Songs album. If RJ hadnt made this record, containing the huge smash Super Freak, I wonder if he would still be alive today. I hadnt played this song in a long time and figured it was time to hear a little Rick James that wasnt Super Freak. What a lot of people dont know, perhaps not even the late Rick Cocaine is a hell of a drug James is that Flipper did the best version of Super Freak. I saw Flipper do that one a few times. Awesome.

The Killjoys Nave: The b-side of the Johnny Wont Get To Heaven single. Kevin Rowland before he was in Dexys Midnight Runners. Not the easiest to find single. I got it for a few bucks in the late 70s and still play it. The single has been re-issued on a Raw Records comp. Two other songs have also found the light of day. For more info, type in Killjoys into the search line at: http://www.punk77.co.uk/ and you will find out more about the band and see the picture sleeve of the single. Either song on this perfect single would have been great to listen to but Johnny Wont has a few words in it that could get me in some more than warm water so tonight, its Nave.

The Lamplighters Be Bop Wino: This is off a CD comp. I found in London years ago called Great Googa Mooga on Sequel Records. It looked interesting so I went for it. Lots of good R&B and Doo Wop stuff on here. One the best songs on it is this great vocal work from the Lamplighters.

Mad Season I Dont Know Anything: Off the Above album by Mad Season. I love this record because Layne Staley is on it. If you are an Alice and Chains fan, then you already have this record Im sure but if you dont, you should.

Crisis Frustration: From the double CD set We Are All Jews and Germans. Hard to find. I have all the vinyl of this band. Heres the 77 punk site address for more info http://www.punk77.co.uk/groups/crisis.htm
